Huntsville Gardens or the Huntsville Botanical Garden is one place in Huntsville Alabama that is sure to meet the fancy of lovers and the whole family. Your Huntsville Gardens is located near the world-famous US Space Rocket Center. This is a place designed for the whole family, and another reason why this garden is a popular destination is the fact that the Gardens are open  year round and comes for free!

The trail plays host to the many flowering dogwood trees and here visitors can also see the hundred year old dogwood that was transplanted to the site. This can be seen along the forest path.

The Fern Glade is another exciting place to visit inside the Gardens, and as the name implies this is the place where visitors can check out different types of ferns. To be exact, around 170 species of ferns can be seen here including the Christmas fern, the Northern Maidenhair fern, the Southern Maidenhair fern, the Sensitive fern and the Cinnamon fern.

Also of great interest to many visitors and tourists are the herb garden and the nature trail. The herb garden offers a great view of the 14 themed gardens and the nature trail on the other hand offers paths going to a portion of the forest within the Gardens.

Huntsville Botanical Garden

Then check out the Huntsville Botanical Garden. This young garden is an ever growing and expanding environment thriving with success.

Take the Dogwood Trail for example. This beautiful upper woodland path meanders through a divine aroma of wildflowers, shrubs, and trees, most notably, the great flowering dogwood just off the main path. This 100-ft. giant was nearly destroyed some years ago when a city construction project almost bulldozed right over it.

Fortunately, a group of city council workers and a few wary civilians saved the dogwood, now transplanted into its new home, flowering each year and a very thriving and healthy environment. The Dogwood is truly and magnificent sight to see.

Need a splash of color?

Check out the blooming Day lily Garden! The garden contains nearly 700 cultivars of Daylilies and is always expanding with new beds. The Daylilies bloom beginning in May up through mid-summer, so come early and often to see them in their vibrant shades of yellow and oranges.

In the direct center is a small gazebo giving a superb panoramic view of the entire day lily garden. It is a fantastic area for reflection upon the ultimate beauty surrounding you on all sides.

Then take a quick drive to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. This 67 acre horticulture is beautifully designed around a serious of connecting trails, all centered the Japanese Garden. Beautiful trellis work, flowering perennials, lush trees and a very rare Japanese Tea house, make up this one-of-a-kind garden. Between these two amazing gardens you will certainly be delighted in the stunning beauty that abounds.

But before you end your visit of the Huntsville Botanical Garden you absolutely must view the main event, the Central Corridor. Featuring the three gardens, this stunning sight is one of paintings and watercolors. One of the gardens, the Perennial Garden, features species adapted to the climate, and includes everything from flowers, to bulbs, to even some small trees…all happily calling this section of the Huntsville Botanical Garden home.

Also be sure to view the small aquatic garden. The garden is host to a plethora of water lily species, all viewable from a small pavilion along the circular pond.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens… More than just a Garden!

That’s just what you’ll find at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens… more than just a garden.

Trees, wildflowers, bushes, shrubs, bulbs, they are all here to see, smell, and reflect upon their serene beauty. In addition to a superb luncheon Café, and library, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens are multipurpose facility.

Across the 67 acres of lush greenery you’ll find just about every type of tree, flower, and sculpture you could imagine! The gardens are setup in a very simplistic meandering trail across the premises.

The walkways offer a unique view down the flowing stream lined by wildflowers, to terraces created entirely from herbs; you’ll also see all manner of plant life along the path. The Crape Myrtle Garden is a definite must see for all visitors. These vibrant pink buds offer superb sun protection, lining the stone walls and ceiling.

Though the trails offer a great place to walk and enjoy the scenery, the Formal Garden is the most stunning. Lush and vibrant greens flood your senses as the whole area seems to be descended from heaven itself. A small pond glistens in the sun alongside the path shaded by the budding Crape Myrtles. It is a beautiful garden, offering a safe and majestic walking or jogging trail for anyone who just wants to enjoy the excellence of nature.

Before you even consider leaving the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, there is one last stop you must make, at the Japanese Gardens. Opened in 1967, this seven and a half acre garden is truly a breathtaking site.

The garden is a unique mix of small shimmering ponds, curved-top torii, and flowing green trees. A small section of this garden has been set aside as a tribute to the Japanese culture and the stunning centerpiece of this portion of the garden is the Japanese tea house. The small structure was created using traditional Japanese methods, tools, and materials. This beautiful tea house is one of about ten in the United States, and its intricate structure and building will truly amaze you.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens are a stunning representation of beauty and serenity in Alabama. It is one of those places that you will remember for years to come and one place that I am quite sure you will plan to re-visit on your next Alabama vacation.
