Huntsville Alabama, located in between Madison and Limestone, is the largest city in northern Alabama. This is settled by a half-million people where the city proper is made up of over 170,000 residents. This city is named after Revolutionary War veteran John Hunt. He was in fact the first settler of the land around the Big Spring. Mr. Hunt had not registered his claim and so the area was later purchased by Leroy Pope, who imposed the name Twickenham on the area which was intended to honor the home village of his distant kinsman Alexander Pope.

Twickenham is studded with streets laying out on the northeast to southwest direction that is based on the Big Spring. Because of the anti-English sentiment during the War of 1812, Twickenham was changed to Huntsville Alabama. This is to honor Mr.Hunt, which had been forced to move to other land south. Mr.Hunt and Mr.Pope were actually Freemasons and charter members of Helion Lodge #1 that time.

Huntsville Alabama was first incorporated town in Alabama back in 1811. The recognized “birth” year of the city is in fact 1805, the year of Hunt’s arrival. The sesquicentennial anniversary of Huntsville was held in 1955 and the bicentennial was celebrated in the year 2005. A great depression in 1930s has surrounded the city because of the industry’s dejection.

Huntsville Alabama was known to be the Watercress Capital of the World since abundant harvest is in the area. Madison County has led Alabama in cotton production at that time. This city is not just filled with histories about wars and despair. Did you know that it is also the home for historic space missions? There are records of exploration in the Rocket Park of the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. You will find great exploration history.

Huntsville can be considered as the home to both Redstone Arsenal and the Marshall Space Flight Center. This is very much evident with the history of Huntsville.

Huntsville Alabama, also called the “The Rocket City” is one remarkable place in the state that should be treasured by each American living there.
