Weeden House Museum

The Weeden House Museum was originally the home of Supreme Court Justice, John McKinley, and the birthplace of famous poet and artist, Maria Howard Weeden. The home was to be an everlasting example of Federal and Antebellum architecture, and it has reached both of those objections beyond comparison.

The home is painted a magnificent white and has all of the finest detail work including, a glass entry fanlight, gabled roof, columns, and an elegantly hand carved mantels. Above all the other design features, the spiral stair case remains the focal point of the house. It’s flowing design and beautifully crafted handrails look as if they descend from heaven itself. The museum is surrounded by beautiful oak and cottonwood trees, as if to frame this masterpiece of antebellum artwork.

In addition to its historical significance as an antebellum treasure, the true popularity of this home came from one of its later dwellers, Maria Howard Weeden. Noted for her poetry, her art was her true passion.

Using her 3-horsehair brush, she spent hours painting her thoughts, feelings, and being onto the canvas. With a masterful use of water color techniques, she taught art school in the home for a time, supporting her family struggling to make do. Though times were hard for the Weeden family during this period, this was the time that Maria produced her greatest paintings and poetry works.

The Weeden House Museum is truly a beacon from a past society and culture. The home was constructed with such beauty and timeless elegance, it’s no wonder it remains such a superb example of Southern Antebellum home masterpieces.

The museum gives you and feeling of true serenity, the walls are covered with the works of Maria, and each room maintains as very unique feel. This is a must see for anyone visiting the quaint streets of Huntsville. The Weeden House Museum… make it a part of your Alabama vacation.
